Discover The Hop

If you ever find yourself driving along Highway US-2 through Wakefield, Michigan, you’ll probably notice a small, inviting spot called The Hop sitting comfortably at 1305 US-2, Wakefield, MI 49968, United States. It’s the kind of place that doesn’t just feed you-it welcomes you like an old friend. I stopped by on a chilly Upper Peninsula morning, the kind that demands comfort food and hot coffee, and walked away feeling like I had stumbled upon a local gem.

The first thing you notice when you walk in is the aroma. It’s that perfect blend of sizzling bacon, freshly brewed coffee, and the hint of something sweet baking in the back. The decor is simple but warm, full of personality-wood tables, a long counter lined with regulars, and servers who seem to know everyone by name. The atmosphere feels like a page out of a Midwest storybook diner, where life slows down just enough to enjoy every bite.

The menu here is exactly what you’d expect from a great American diner-but better. From hearty breakfast platters to juicy burgers, every dish feels homemade. I tried their classic eggs and hash browns combo, cooked perfectly golden and crispy. What stood out most was how fresh everything tasted. They use local ingredients whenever possible, supporting nearby farms and bakeries-a detail that sets them apart from many chain restaurants. According to data from the Michigan Restaurant Association, locally sourced menus are linked with higher customer satisfaction, and you can really taste that here.

Lunch at this diner brings in a crowd of locals, road trippers, and even snowmobilers during winter. One regular I chatted with swore by their double cheeseburger, while another said the Friday fish fry is “the best you’ll find north of Milwaukee.” And they weren’t exaggerating-the fish was light, crispy, and seasoned just right, paired with homemade tartar sauce and hand-cut fries that disappeared too quickly. There’s something deeply authentic about food made by people who genuinely care about it.

Beyond the food, what makes this place special is its consistency and the way it connects to the Wakefield community. Restaurants like this thrive not just because of good cooking but because of the people behind them. You’ll often see the owner out front, greeting diners and asking how their meal is going-a level of care that’s increasingly rare in the fast-paced dining scene. According to the National Restaurant Association, independent establishments that maintain strong customer relationships see return rates up to 40% higher than chains, and this diner is living proof.

The Hop is also strategically located for travelers. Being right on US-2, it’s an easy stop for those heading toward Ironwood or exploring the western edge of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. That accessibility, paired with great food and service, makes it both a local favorite and a tourist must-stop. It’s the kind of place you can count on whether you’re grabbing breakfast before a day on the trails or winding down after a long drive through the woods.

Reading through some online reviews, you’ll find a common thread: consistency, friendliness, and quality. Customers often mention the generous portions, the clean and cozy setting, and how every visit feels personal. One review summed it up perfectly-“You don’t just eat here; you feel at home.” That sentiment captures exactly what makes this diner memorable. From my own experience, I couldn’t agree more. The combination of hearty food, genuine hospitality, and a touch of small-town charm makes it stand out in a world of fast food and fleeting service.

If you appreciate a good meal served with sincerity, this Wakefield spot is well worth the stop. Whether you’re a local or a traveler passing through, you’ll find that its reputation isn’t just talk-it’s earned, plate by plate.

  • This is an easy to miss place in the middle of nowhere in the UP, but they make one of the best sandwiches I've ever had (smoked and spiced)! If you happen to be in the area, I highly recommend stopping by and trying that sandwich. The soft serve ice cream was disappointing, but very reasonably priced, and the workers seemed pretty miserable (though the food came out fairly fast)

  • We had wonderful hotdogs and loved the tater tots accompanying them. Good courteous, fast service. Ice cream good with generous portions. We sat at clean picnic tables that would have been improved with shade. Good value.

  • Absolutely delicious place to eat and grab ice cream! Vegetarian friendly options too (sandwich’s without the meat )

  • Very good bbq pork sandwich! Its a must try and the hint of smokiness in the entirety of what they combine to make their uniqeuness, is a hit, and out of this world. I've had BBQ in a lot of parts of the world, and I'm happy to have this gem of a restaurant a half mile away from where I live. Kudos to the Hop!
